Updated on July 31, 2019. Aaron Douglas (1899-1979) was one of the pioneers of the development of African American art. He was a significant member of the Harlem Renaissance movement of the 1920s and 1930s.

Around 1925, Aaron Douglas began to make a name for himself, and he was commissioned by the NAACP and the national urban league to create his work the new Negro for art.
